Heads up: you don't need Shopify Plus for post-purchase upsells. See Which Checkout Plus Features Require Shopify Plus? for the full list.
Black Friday shoppers who just paid are the warmest audience you'll have all weekend. With Checkout Plus, you can show them one more offer on the post-purchase page, right after payment and before the order confirmation. If they tap Pay now, the item is added to the order they just placed.
This guide walks you through building a BFCM post-purchase upsell with a discount and a countdown, turning it on in Shopify, and testing it before the big weekend.
Before you start
Checkout Plus installed on your Shopify store
The product you want to offer, with enough inventory for the whole weekend
Your BFCM discount for the offer, if you're adding one
A few minutes to place a test order with a regular card payment
Step 1: Open Post Purchase Content
In Shopify admin, open Apps → Checkout Plus.
Under App blocks, select Customize your Post Purchase Page. This opens the Post Purchase Content page.
Step 2: Create a Product Upsell
Select Create New at the top right.
In Select Content Type, pick Product Upsell. This offers customers additional products after they complete their purchase.
Good to know: want to send shoppers to a page instead, like a gift guide or your app? Pick Call to Action. It shows a custom button that redirects to a URL.
Step 3: Write your offer
Under Display Settings, add a Title. It's the main heading for the post-purchase experience. Description is optional, and the product image is added automatically.
Under Callout Header Message, write your Callout Message. This is the banner at the top, like
It's not too late to add this to your order! {{ timer }}.Optional: fill in Discount Header Message Subheading. It shows before the discount title when a discount is applied, and you can use
{{productTitle}}as a placeholder.Optional: change the Pay now button and Decline button text. Leave them blank to use Pay now and Decline this offer. The amount due is added after the Pay now label.
Step 4: Add a countdown
In Countdown timer (seconds), enter how long the offer lasts. For example,
300is 5 minutes. Leave it empty or enter 0 for no timer.Make sure your Callout Message includes
{{ timer }}. That's where the countdown (or "Offer expired") shows up.Under When countdown expires, choose what happens at zero. With Let customer choose (Decline or Stay), the customer picks Decline offer or Stay on screen before continuing.
Step 5: Pick the product and the discount
Under Type-Specific Configuration → Product Selection, add the product you want to offer. Customers choose a variant on the post-purchase page.
Optional: check Display quantity picker to let customers choose how many to add.
Under Discount (Optional), pick a Discount Type (like Percentage), enter a Discount Value between 0 and 100, and add a Discount Title like
Save 20%.Optional: check Limit when this upsell is shown to only show it when certain conditions are met, like products in the order or cart total.
Step 6: Turn it on and save
Under Settings, keep Enabled checked. Only enabled content is shown to customers.
Set a Priority. Lower numbers have higher priority, and content is shown in priority order.
Check the Preview panel to see your banner, discount, and buttons. It reflects your display settings, but it isn't an exact copy of the post-purchase page.
Save your upsell.
Step 7: Choose Checkout Plus for your post-purchase page
Shopify lets only one app run your post-purchase page, so you need to pick Checkout Plus in your checkout settings.
In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Checkout.
Scroll to the Post-purchase page section and select Checkout Plus.
Select Save.
Shopify only shows the Post-purchase page section after an app's setup is done, so finish Steps 2 to 6 first. More in Shopify's post-purchase page docs.
Step 8: Test it before the sale
Place a test order and pay with a regular card. Skip gift cards and express wallets for this test.
After payment, check that your offer shows with the callout banner, the countdown, your discount, and the Pay now and Decline this offer buttons.
Try both buttons, and check the page on mobile and desktop.
Tips
Keep it to one strong offer that goes with what they just bought. A refill, an accessory, or a small add-on is an easy yes.
Pick a product with plenty of stock, so your offer doesn't sell out halfway through the weekend.
Running more than one upsell? Use Priority to choose which one shows first, and Limit when this upsell is shown to match offers to what's in the order.
Keep the countdown friendly. A few minutes adds urgency without rushing anyone.
Some shoppers won't see the post-purchase page (see Troubleshooting). Add a lighter offer to your Thank you page too, so everyone gets one. Here's how to set up Thank you page upsells for Black Friday.
Check Post Purchase Performance (Last 30 Days) on the Post Purchase Content page during the weekend to see Upsells Accepted and Total Value Added.
Troubleshooting
The offer isn't showing at all
Check that Enabled is checked and that Checkout Plus is selected under Post-purchase page in Settings → Checkout. If Limit when this upsell is shown is on, make sure your test order meets those conditions.
Some orders skip the post-purchase page
That's expected. Post purchase content doesn't display when an order is paid entirely with a gift card, when the customer uses express wallet payments, or when the order total is zero. A Thank you page offer reaches those shoppers.
I can't find Post-purchase page in my checkout settings
Shopify only shows that section after an app's setup is done. Create and save your upsell in Checkout Plus first, then check again.
The countdown isn't showing
Make sure Countdown timer (seconds) isn't empty or 0, and that your Callout Message includes {{ timer }}.
The wrong offer shows first
Check Priority on each upsell. Lower numbers show first.
