Around Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the big question on every shopper's mind is "will this arrive in time?" With a Checkout Plus Custom Banner, you can answer it right in checkout, where they're deciding, and again on the Thank you and Order status pages after they buy.

This guide walks you through setting up a shipping cutoff banner, placing it in checkout and after purchase, and swapping the message once a cutoff passes.

Checkout with a Black Friday shipping cutoff Custom Banner at the top of the Information step

Before you start

  • Checkout Plus installed on your Shopify store

  • Access to the Shopify Checkout Editor. Banners can go on checkout (requires Shopify Plus) and on the Thank you and Order status pages (all Shopify plans).

  • Your real holiday shipping cutoffs. Check your carriers' published holiday deadlines and your own processing time before you write anything.

  • Not sure what needs Shopify Plus? See Which Checkout Plus Features Require Shopify Plus?.

Step 1: Open Custom Banner Message

  1. In Shopify admin, open Apps → Checkout Plus.

  2. Under App blocks, select Customize your Checkout.

  3. On Browse checkout app blocks, search for banner.

  4. Find Custom Banner Message and select Manage.

Step 2: Write your shipping cutoff message

  1. In Custom Banner Advanced Settings, pick a profile under Editing Profile. You get 5 independent profiles, and changes only apply to the one you select. Use one that isn't already running another banner.

  2. Optional: add a Banner Title, like Holiday shipping.

  3. In Banner Message, write your cutoff in plain words, like Black Friday Sale! Order Before November 25th to get your order on time! Swap in your own date.

  4. Pick a Banner Style (Color). The example above uses the yellow warning style, which stands out without looking like an error.

  5. Select Save. When the Add extension to checkout prompt pops up, select Open Checkout Editor to place the banner now, or Dismiss and use Open Editor later.

Good to know: the Preview is marked Approximate, so always check the real checkout too (Step 6).

Optional: only show it when the cutoff applies. Back in the same profile, you can add display conditions so the banner only shows when cart, customer, or product rules match. Select Add condition, then pick a rule from the dropdown. For shipping cutoffs, these are the most useful:

  • Selected Shipping Method: show the cutoff only for the shipping method it applies to, like your standard option.

  • Selected Delivery Type: show it for shipped orders, so local pickup shoppers don't see a delivery date.

  • Shipping Country Code or Shipping Country Code is Not: show different cutoffs for domestic and international orders.

  • Shipping State/Province Code: handle regions that need extra transit time.

  • Market: show a cutoff only in the market it applies to, if you sell in more than one.

Need a different cutoff for each region or shipping method? Use a separate profile for each one, each with its own conditions, and add a Custom Banner block for each profile in Step 4. Select Save again when you're done.

Step 3: Add the Custom Banner block to checkout

  1. In the Checkout Editor, go to the checkout step where shoppers think about delivery, like Information.

  2. Under Main, select Add block.

  3. Search for banner and choose Custom Banner under Checkout Plus.

Step 4: Pick your profile and save

  1. In the block settings, open Custom Banner Settings Profile and select the profile from Step 2.

  2. Optional: under Checkout behavior, turn on Include block in Shop Pay so Shop Pay buyers see it too.

  3. Select Save.

Tip: pick your profile rather than Use Editor Settings. That option only uses values set in the checkout editor, so the message you wrote in Checkout Plus won't be used.

Step 5: Set expectations on the Thank you and Order status pages

After someone buys, a quick note about when their order ships cuts down on "where's my order?" emails. These pages work on all Shopify plans.

  1. Back in Custom Banner Advanced Settings, pick another unused profile and write a post-purchase message, like Your Order is estimated to arrive before November 25th. Swap in your own date, then select Save.

  2. In the Checkout Editor, use the page selector at the top to switch to Thank you (or Order status).

  3. Under Main, select Add block, search for banner, and choose Custom Banner under Checkout Plus.

  4. In Custom Banner Settings Profile, pick your post-purchase profile.

  5. Select Save.

Here's what shoppers see on the Thank you page once it's live:

Prefer to start from the app? The Checkout Plus home also has Customize your Thank You Page and Customize your Order Status Page.

Step 6: Test it

  1. From your storefront, add a product to your cart and go to checkout. Check that the banner shows where you placed it, on mobile and desktop.

  2. If you added conditions, test a cart that matches them and one that doesn't, like a different shipping method or country.

  3. If you turned on Include block in Shop Pay, check it in Shop Pay too.

  4. Place a test order and check the banner on the Thank you page, then open the Order status page.

Step 7: Update the message when a cutoff passes

Cutoffs change fast in late November and December. When one passes, update the message right away so shoppers never see a date that's already gone.

  1. Open Custom Banner Message → Manage, pick the same profile, edit the Banner Message, and select Save. The block keeps using that profile, so there's nothing to change in the Checkout Editor.

  2. Or, set up your next message in another profile ahead of time, then switch Custom Banner Settings Profile on the block when the day comes, and select Save.

Tips

Troubleshooting

  • Banner doesn't show: Make sure the Custom Banner block is added and saved in the Checkout Editor, and that Custom Banner Settings Profile points at the profile you edited.

  • Wrong message shows: You have 5 profiles. Check that the block uses your shipping profile, not Use Editor Settings or a different profile.

  • Banner only shows for some carts: If you added conditions to the profile, check that your test cart matches them, like the selected shipping method or shipping country.

  • Banner missing in Shop Pay: In the block settings, turn on Include block in Shop Pay, then save.

  • Old date still showing: Make sure you saved the profile in Custom Banner Advanced Settings, then reload checkout.

  • Message is in the wrong language: Translations can override the banner message, so update your translated message too.

  • Can't place it on checkout: Checkout placement requires Shopify Plus. On other plans, add your message to the Thank you and Order status pages instead (see Step 5).
