How to Add Clickable Links to Your Shopify Checkout

Add clickable links like your shipping policy, size guide, or FAQ to Shopify checkout with a Checkout Plus Custom Banner, and open them in a new tab so buyers stay in checkout.

Sometimes shoppers need one more detail before they buy, like your shipping policy, a size guide, or your terms. With a Checkout Plus Custom Banner, you can drop clickable links right into your Shopify checkout, plus your Thank you and Order status pages, so those answers are one click away.

You can also have banner links open in a new tab, so buyers can check the info and hop right back to their checkout.

Before you start

  • Checkout Plus installed on your Shopify store

  • Access to the Shopify Checkout Editor. Links can go on checkout (requires Shopify Plus) and on the Thank you and Order status pages (all plans).

  • The URLs you want to link to, like your shipping policy, returns policy, size guide, or FAQ page

  • Not sure which plan you need? See How to Choose the Right Checkout Plus Plan.

Step 1: Open Custom Banner Message

  1. In Shopify admin, open Apps → Checkout Plus.

  2. Under App blocks, select Customize your Checkout.

  3. On Browse checkout app blocks, search for banner.

  4. Find Custom Banner Message and select Manage.

Step 2: Pick a profile and choose Link

  1. In Custom Banner Advanced Settings, pick a profile under Editing Profile. You get 5 independent profiles, and changes only apply to the one you select.

  2. Next to Banner Message, select Insert dynamic value.

  3. In the Dynamic value dropdown, choose Link. You'll see "Inserts a clickable link token." under it.

Step 3: Add your link text and URL

  1. In Link text, type what shoppers will see, like Terms & Conditions.

  2. In URL, paste the page address. Include https:// (or http://) at the start.

  3. Select Insert.

Step 4: Save and open the Checkout Editor

  1. Your link now shows up in Banner Message as a link token that holds your link text and URL. The picker writes it for you, so there's nothing to type by hand.

  2. Add any text you want around the link, like "Please review our" before it. The Preview (marked Approximate) shows how the link will look.

  3. Want more than one link? Select Insert dynamic value again for each one.

  4. Select Save.

  5. The Add extension to checkout prompt pops up. Select Open Checkout Editor to place the banner now, or Dismiss and use Open Editor anytime later.

Step 5: Choose your link options in Advanced

Back in the same profile, scroll down to the Advanced section. Check any of these link options:

  • Monochrome link style: banner links use the surrounding text color instead of the accent link color.

  • External link indicator: shows a ↗ after each link label in checkout. Checkout links only support a single line of text, so a full icon isn't used.

  • Open links in a new tab: each banner link opens in a new tab so buyers keep their checkout open. Great for policies and guides.

Select Save when you're done.

Step 6: Add the Custom Banner block

  1. In the Checkout Editor, go to the checkout step where the link should appear (like Information).

  2. Under Main, select Add block.

  3. Search for banner and choose Custom Banner under Checkout Plus.

Step 7: Pick your profile and save

  1. In the block settings, open Custom Banner Settings Profile and select the profile you set up in Step 2.

  2. Check the preview. Your banner should show the link text.

  3. Select Save.

Tip: Pick your profile rather than Use Editor Settings. That option only uses values set in the checkout editor, so the link you set up in Checkout Plus won't be used.

Step 8 (optional): Add links to the Thank you and Order status pages

The same banner profile works after purchase too, and these pages work on all Shopify plans. They're a great spot for order tracking help, your returns policy, or your support and FAQ pages.

  1. In the Checkout Editor, use the page selector at the top to switch to Thank you (or Order status).

  2. Under Main, select Add block.

  3. Search for banner and choose Custom Banner under Checkout Plus.

  4. In Custom Banner Settings Profile, pick your profile.

  5. Select Save.

Prefer to start from the app? The Checkout Plus home also has Customize your Thank You Page and Customize your Order Status Page. Want different links after purchase? Set them up in another profile and pick that one here.

Step 9: Test your links

  1. From your storefront, add a product to your cart and go to checkout.

  2. Click each banner link and make sure it lands on the right page.

  3. If you turned on Open links in a new tab, confirm the page opens in a new tab and your checkout is still there in the original tab.

  4. If you added the banner to the Thank you or Order status page, place a test order and check the links there too.

Tips

  • Good links to add: shipping policy, returns policy, terms, size guide, and FAQ.

  • Keep link text short. Checkout links only support a single line of text, so Size guide works better than a full sentence.

  • Turn on Open links in a new tab for anything shoppers will read and come back from.

  • Need a countdown in the same kind of banner? See How to Add a Countdown Timer with Checkout Plus (Custom Banner).

Troubleshooting

  • Banner doesn't show: Make sure the Custom Banner block is added and saved in the Checkout Editor, and that Custom Banner Settings Profile points at the profile you edited.

  • Wrong banner content: You have 5 profiles. Check that the block uses the profile you set up, not Use Editor Settings or a different profile.

  • Link goes to the wrong page or doesn't work: Check that the URL starts with https:// or http://. If needed, delete the link token, add it again with Insert dynamic value, and select Save.

  • Link opens in the same tab: Make sure Open links in a new tab is checked on the same profile the block uses, and that you saved it.

  • Link missing in another language: Translations can override the banner message, so add the link to your translated message too. See How to Translate Your Checkout Plus Extensions.

  • Can't place it on checkout: Checkout placement requires Shopify Plus. On other plans, add your links to the Thank you and Order status pages instead (see Step 8).
