Usage limits in Discount Plus let you cap how often a shopper can use a discount and how many discounted products they can buy. This guide walks through turning on Usage Limits when you create a product discount.
Before you start
Discount Plus installed on your Shopify store
A clear limit in mind (for example: 1 use per customer, or up to 5 discounted items total)
Step 1: Open Create Product Discounts
In Shopify admin, open Apps → Discount Plus.
Under Discount Types, select Create on Product Discounts.
In the Create Product Discounts dialog, select Create next to the type you want (for example Standard Discount, Tiered (Volume) Discount, Buy X Get Y (BOGO), or Free Gift). Usage limits live on the create/edit screen for that type.
Step 2: Fill in basic information (optional eligibility)
On the Create Product Discount page, under Step 1: Basic Information, choose Automatic discount or Discount code.
Enter a Discount Title (internal) and, for automatic discounts, a Discount Message shown to customers.
Optional: under Customer eligibility, choose who can use the discount. Options under Who can use this discount are All customers, Specific customers, or Customer segments.
If you pick Customer segments, select Edit segments, choose segments in the Select customer segments dialog, then select Done.
Note: Customer eligibility is optional. All customers can use the discount unless you limit it. Only one of specific customers or customer segments can be selected, and the customer must be signed in for those limits to apply.
Step 3: Turn on Usage Limits
Scroll to Usage Limits. The helper text says you can leave fields blank for unlimited use.
Check Enable customer usage limits.
Set Maximum number of uses per customer (allowed range: 1–10,000). Example:
2means each customer can use this discount twice.Set Maximum total product quantity per customer (allowed range: 1–100,000). Example:
5means a customer can buy up to five discounted products with this discount across their uses.Optional: check Apply discount when customer information is not available if you want the discount to still apply on guest checkouts before the shopper enters their details. Customer limits are still enforced after they provide their information.
Step 4: Finish combinations and save
In the sidebar, review Discount Summary.
Under Discount Combinations, choose whether the discount Can be combined with product discounts, Can be combined with order discounts, and/or Can be combined with shipping discounts.
Set Discount application strategy (for example Apply this discount first) when multiple discounts are eligible.
Save the discount when your configuration, dates, and values are ready.
Tips
Use a low Maximum number of uses per customer for one-time welcome or BFCM codes.
Use Maximum total product quantity per customer when you care more about how many units someone can get discounted than how many orders they place.
If you rely on signed-in eligibility or usage tracking, decide intentionally whether Apply discount when customer information is not available should stay on for guests.
Troubleshooting
Limits don’t seem to apply. Confirm Enable customer usage limits is checked and both maximum fields have values in range. If you limited eligibility to specific customers or segments, the shopper must be signed in.
Guest checkout still gets the discount. That’s expected when Apply discount when customer information is not available is on. Limits still apply after the customer provides their information. Uncheck that option if you only want identified customers to receive the discount before limits run.
I can’t find Usage Limits. Open a product discount create/edit screen from Product Discounts → Create in the Create Product Discounts dialog. Usage Limits sits below Customer eligibility on that page.
