Heads up: this setup requires a Shopify Plus store with Checkout Plus installed.
Want to reward bigger Black Friday orders? With Checkout Plus, you can add a free gift to the cart automatically once a shopper's cart reaches a total you pick. Then use Schedule to set a go-live window, so the gift turns on for your sale and off when it's over. No late night toggling required.
It's an easy way to nudge shoppers to add one more thing to their cart during BFCM. This guide walks you through the whole setup and how to test it before the big weekend.
Before you start
A Shopify Plus store
Checkout Plus installed
Your gift product set up in Shopify, with enough inventory for the whole weekend
A gift that's free at checkout. Products that aren't free won't be added automatically. The customer is prompted to add them instead.
Your cart total goal and your sale start and end times
Step 1: Open the Auto Add editor
In Shopify admin, open Apps → Checkout Plus.
Under App blocks, select Customize your Checkout.
Open Auto Add Product (Gift with Purchase) and select Manage, then create a customization to open the Auto Add Gift/Product To Cart Editor.
Step 2: Name it and set your cart total goal
Under Step #1: Name Your Customization, enter a Customization Name, like
Black Friday Free Gift. Customers won't see this.Under Step #2: Condition To Add Product to Cart, open Select Condition and pick Based on Cart Total.
In the row that appears, keep Cart Total and is greater than, then enter your goal in the amount field.
Selling in more than one currency? Check Convert amount to the customer's currency. Your goal is converted from your shop currency into the currency the customer sees at checkout. It's off by default.
Under Excluded products, select Add excluded product and add your gift. Products in this list don't count toward the cart total, so the gift can't help a shopper reach the goal.
Under Remove gift when the trigger is no longer met, keep Remove gift from cart when condition is not met (recommended) and Only remove if added by this app checked. That way, if a shopper drops below your goal, the gift leaves the cart too.
Step 3: Pick the gift
Under Step #3: Select Products to add to the cart at Checkout, select Select Product and choose your gift.
Optional: use Variants in this offer, Quantity, and Enforce Quantity Limit to fine tune the gift.
Want shoppers to pick their own gift? Under Customer selection at checkout, check Let customer choose their gift(s) or Let customer choose variant before adding.
Step 4: Schedule it for Black Friday
In the Summary, make sure Status is Active.
Check Schedule. Times use your browser's local time and are stored as UTC.
In Go live (Start), pick when the gift starts. It only applies at or after this time.
In End, pick when the gift stops. It only applies at or before this time.
Select Save.
Good to know: both dates are optional. Leave both empty and the gift runs whenever your other conditions match. Shoppers who keep checkout open across your start or end time may need to refresh for the gift to update.
Step 5: Add the gift block in the Checkout Editor
Open the Shopify Checkout Editor. Under Order summary, select Add block.
Search
giftand, under Checkout Plus, pick Auto Add Product (Gift with Purchase).
Optional: under Checkout behavior, turn on Include block in Shop Pay.
Select Save.
Step 6: Test it before the sale
Add products to a test cart that's just under your goal and go to checkout. The gift shouldn't be there yet.
Add one more item so the cart passes your goal. The gift should show up in the order marked FREE.
Remove that item again and check that the gift leaves the cart too.
Check both mobile and desktop checkouts.
Testing before your go-live window starts? Your scheduled gift won't show until the window opens. To test early, set up the same gift on a development or staging store first.
Tips
Set your goal a little above your usual order total, so the gift gives shoppers a real reason to add one more item.
Mention the gift in your Black Friday emails and banners, so shoppers know what they're working toward.
Use Customer eligibility in the editor to choose All Customers, B2B, or Non-B2B if the gift is only for some buyers.
Running a one for one promo instead? Pick a product based condition, then under Other optional settings, check Add gifts at a 1:1 ratio with the trigger. Customers get one gift for each trigger, so buying 3 means 3 gifts.
Troubleshooting
The gift isn't showing at all
Check that you're on a Shopify Plus store, the customization's Status is Active, and the Auto Add Product (Gift with Purchase) block is added and saved in the Checkout Editor. If Schedule is on, make sure you're between Go live (Start) and End.
Customers are asked to add the gift instead of getting it automatically
The gift isn't free. Products that aren't free are offered to the customer instead of being added.
The gift shows up too early or too late
Double check Go live (Start) and End. Times use your browser's local time and are stored as UTC, so set them from a browser in the time zone you want. Shoppers who already had checkout open may need to refresh.
The gift unlocks too early
Add your gift under Excluded products, so it doesn't count toward the cart total.
The gift stays after the cart drops below the goal
Check that Remove gift from cart when condition is not met (recommended) is checked.
